I have offered the following classes in oil painting at my studio at 756 Queen Street East in Toronto. See below for information on courses now in session, and check here for information on upcoming courses and workshops.
Oil Painting Basics from Photographs.001 ALL CLASSES ARE CANCELLED TILL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO COVID 19
This course teaches a sound method for developing an oil painting from start to finish, using painting from photographs as a point of departure. Students will learn to prepare a support, apply a design and develop the imagery through roughing in to finish strokes. Students will broaden their drawings skills while learning to use a grid to transfer/enlarge a master design onto the support, as well as colour theory and painting techniques including use of mediums and solvents, colour mixing, brushwork and use of the palette knife. Students will learn to recognize potential problems using photographic reference material, and to correct for such issues when they arise.
Students will be provided with an easel and palette but must supply their own oil paint and brushes. The course is designed for beginners and intermediate students, but advanced painters who would like a refresher in oil technique will also benefit.
The course comprises 20 hours of instruction in 10 sessions of 2 hours each. The course fee is $400. One student may reserve the studio for this fee, or two students may share the same section time for $300 each (total $600). Some materials are provided as noted but paint and brushes are not included. I can supply basic oil painting sets that are suitable, at cost (approximately $30). If students have already taken Oil Painting Basics from Photography.001 the curriculum may be adjusted by mutual consent to reflect intermediate status.
Oil Painting Basics from Photography.001- summer session -TUESDAY EVENINGS 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Oil Painting Basics from Photography.001- autumn session -TUESDAY EVENINGS 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Oil Painting from Still Life.002 ALL CLASSES ARE CANCELLED TILL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO COVID 19
This course is intended as a logical extension of .001 - students will learn to draw and paint in oils with the brush from live observation of a still life set up. The intention is not to produce one finished work but to start and finish an oil sketch from each class, using a different set up each week. Students will develop drawing and observational ability and hone the skill of rapid observation of basic masses and shapes in a live motif.
Students will be provided with an easel and palette but must supply their own oil paint, brushes and canvases. The course is designed for beginners and intermediate students, but advanced painters who would like a refresher in oil technique will also benefit.
